Frequently Asked Questions

What is Thai massage and how does it work?

Thai massage is a traditional therapeutic massage that combines stretching, acupressure, and rhythmic movements to release muscle tension, improve flexibility, and promote deep relaxation. It works by stimulating the body’s energy lines while gently mobilising joints and soft tissue.

Unlike oil-based massages, traditional Thai massage is performed in loose clothing on a mat or firm surface. The western preference is oil-based Thai massage.

What should I wear for a Thai massage?

For traditional Thai massage, wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows movement.

What types of massage are available at Lavender Thai Therapy?

Lavender Thai Therapy offers a range of professional massage treatments, including:

  • Traditional Thai Massage (Stress Relief & Muscle Tension Massage)
  • Thai Oil Massage (Most Popular)
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Swedish / Relaxation Massage
  • Sports Massage

Each massage is tailored to your individual needs and comfort level.

What is the difference between Thai massage and deep tissue massage?

Thai massage focuses on assisted stretching and pressure along energy lines, helping improve mobility and flexibility.

Deep tissue massage targets deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to relieve chronic tension, stiffness, and muscle pain. Your therapist can recommend the best option based on your goals.

Do I need to be flexible to have a Thai massage?

No, not at all. Thai massage is suitable for people of all flexibility levels. Your therapist will always work within your comfort range and adapt stretches and pressure to suit your body.

What should I wear for my massage?

For traditional Thai massage, comfortable loose-fitting clothing is recommended.

For oil-based massages, you will be provided with towels and covered appropriately throughout the treatment to ensure privacy and comfort.

Is Thai massage painful?

Thai massage should not be painful. Some techniques may feel strong, especially if you have tight muscles, but the pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level. Please communicate with your therapist during the treatment if anything feels uncomfortable.

How long does a session last?

Massage sessions typically last:

  • 60 minutes
  • 90 minutes

A shorter 30 minute is available, but we do not include our shower facilities in this price.

Longer sessions allow more time for deeper relaxation and more thorough treatment of problem areas.

What are the benefits of Thai massage?

Benefits may include:

  • Reduced muscle tension and stiffness
  • Improved flexibility and mobility
  • Better circulation
  • Stress and anxiety relief
  • Improved posture and energy levels

Many clients feel both relaxed and re-energised after treatment.

Is massage suitable if I have an injury or medical condition?

Massage can be very beneficial, but it’s important to let us know about:

  • Recent injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Medical conditions
  • Pregnancy
  • Any medications you are taking

If you are unsure, please consult your GP before booking.

Will I feel sore after my massage?

Some people may experience mild soreness, especially after deep tissue or sports massage. This is normal and usually settles within 24–48 hours. Drinking water and gentle stretching can help.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, we recommend booking in advance to ensure availability. Same-day appointments may be available depending on demand.

What aftercare should I follow?

After your massage we recommend:

  • Drinking plenty of water, avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Avoiding heavy exercise for the rest of the day
  • Taking time to relax, have a hot bath
  • Gentle stretching exercises, if advised

This helps your body get the most benefit from the treatment.

How often should I have a massage?

This depends on your needs:

  • For relaxation or stress relief: every 2–4 weeks
  • For muscle tension or physical work: every 1–2 weeks
  • For sports or injury prevention: regularly during training

Your therapist can advise what’s best for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be charged.
