Meet the Laughing Buddha!

He was a monk who lived around the 10th century and became a symbol of contentment, good fortune and a life free from want. In Eastern philosophy, true wealth comes from being satisfied with what you have, and the Laughing Buddha embodies that ideal.
Thai people love his joyful appearance. He attracts good fortune, happiness and the ability to absorb life’s difficulties and carry the worries of others with a smile.

The Laughing Buddha symbolises a person whose heart is full of generosity, blended with a spirit of hospitality. His large belly is a particularly defining feature and carries several positive symbolic meanings. It isn’t a symbol of obesity or indulgence. In Feng Shui traditions, rubbing the belly is said to invite prosperity and abundance. This is a cultural folk belief, not a Buddhist teaching.

His broad laughing expression, signifies joy, laughter and optimism; these are seen as healing attributes. He wears a beaded necklace, often representing spiritual practice or blessings. He carries a large sack over his shoulder; traditionally said to contain the worries of humanity that he carries away. The objects hanging from his hand resemble ingots. These are symbols of wealth, health and longevity.
Whether you believe in the symbolism or not, the laughing buddha serves as a lovely daily reminder to approach the day’s treatments with warmth and positivity. He associates wisdom as not avoiding difficulties but from meeting them with patience, humour and compassion.

The Laughing Buddha represents good luck. He is placed near our business entrance to invite prosperity and positive energy, combined with a spirit of hospitality.
